Pocahontas’s birth year is unknown, but some historians estimate it to have been around 1595 based on the accounts of Captain John Smith. She was the daughter of Powhatan, the paramount chief of Tsenacommacah, an alliance of American Indian tribes and groups in the area of what would later be Virgina.

Pocahontas’s childhood likely was no different from most girls who lived in Tsenacommacah. She learned how to perform what was considered to be women’s work, which included foraging for food and firewood, farming, and searching for the plant materials used in building thatch houses. As she grew older, she probably helped with other members of Powhatan’s household preparing large feasts. It’s supposed that this is how she met John Smith, who she later married.

When she converted to Christianity and too the Anglicized name of “Rebecca” – it is surmised that may have been a symbolic gesture to Rebecca of the Book of Genesis who, as the mother of Jacob and Esau, was the mother of two “nations,” or distinct peoples. Pocahontas, as an American Indian marrying an Englishman, likely would have been seen by herself and by her contemporaries as also being, potentially, the mother of two nations.

What a fantastic role model Pocahontas is, and the Pocahontas costume for girls is a fantastic Halloween choice for your little girl.

On all Smurf Costumes

With the release of the new movie, Smurfs in 3D, every child is going be smurfing themselves to get one of these costumes! This is another great theme for the whole family, as there are Smurf costumes in every size, from infant bunting right up to Mom and Dad. And don’t forget – there are Gargamel costumes too!

Smurfs are a happy and friendly race of forest dwellers, similar to gnomes. Many people grew up watching the Smurfs cartoons in the 1980s might be surprised to find out that the Smurfs have actually been around since the late 1950s, when they were created by a Belgian cartoonist name Peyo.  They were originally called “schtroumpf“, a word he invented at dinner one night. Schtroumpf was replaced by Smurf in the Dutch versions of the comics.

The Smurfs were so popular that they prompted their first animated film in 1965 – The Adventures of the Smurfs. In 1976, the movie The Smurfs and the Magic Flute was released in the US, and Smurf ‘culture” became a smash hit here. Of course, in 2011 we had the release of the movie Smurfs in 3D, which has opened up a love of the Smurfs to a whole new generation.

Wizard of Oz Costumes for Toddlers

Wizard of Oz costumes are a timeless choice for your toddler or baby.

It’s an especially good choice if you’d like to do a family or group theme. There are options for both boys and girls – Dorothy, Glenda the Good Witch, the Wicked Witch, The Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion – or my favorite, the Scarecrow.

This cute romper style costume comes complete with the matching headgear. The one piece romper is styled to look like a green straw-stuffed shirt and brown pants that feature a matching green patch.

The Wizard of Oz is a classic tale for teaching children the important lesson – “There’s No Place Like Home”.  Dorothy is the main character, and the story follows her as she is whisked away to the land of OZ by an errant tornado. Despite having a spat with her aunt and uncle back home, Dorothy soon learns that no matter what troubles you may have at home, that’s the place where you belong.  She wanders the land of OZ in a desperate attempt to find the Emerald City, where she has been told that the Wizard of OZ will hope her make her way home. Along the way, she makes three special friends – The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion – who help her on her travels and as she faces the Wicked Witch of the West, who is out to stop Dorothy at all costs.
